Hi Riven,

Yes, that would work just fine. You are correct about needing a crossover cable to connect the computers to each other correctly. That will not be the case if you use the switch. There is really nothing to translate to Linux.

Computer 1: IP Address 192.168.0.100
                      Netmask 255.255.255.0

Computer 2: IP Address 192.168.0.101
                      Netmask 255.255.255.0
                      Gateway 192.168.0.100
                      Nameserver 192.168.1.1

I assume you know how to configure Computer 1 to share its internet connection.

How difficult would it be to run one cable to the router? It seems like that might be the easiest solution.

Have fun!

You can do it by sharing the internet connection on the computer. If you run the wizard, it will set up dhcp on the host as well.

I would ask though.. the wireless router has to be connected to something... why not put that connection to the 8 port switch and hang the wireless off the switch. Then you can wire several more computers... and wired is faster than wireless, especially if you're going to be sharing files or printers....
References :
you can always make your other computer wireless and that way you'll have two wireless computers. When you go to that website scroll all the way down until you see Adapters, and you'll see all the adapters you could get for your desktop and/or laptop...
References :
http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C1&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1115416939789&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=3978991233B01
