Is it possible to tie the moon to the earth with a string or rope? or computer cable?

Filed under: cable on computer — admin @ 1:44 am

One end of the cable located somewhere safe and guarded here on earth, and then stretched to the heavens, and the other end firmly attached to some place on the moon.

It would wrap around the moon and the earth.

  1. Nope.

Think about it: does the moon stay in one place in the sky, or do we observe it move across the sky in the period of a night? Though one side of the moon always faces the earth, the earth rotates faster than the moon goes all the way around the earth.

  2. The moon orbits around the earth in about 27.3 days. Even if the cable could support it’s own weight, it could not last long if if wrapped around the earth at the rate of 40,075+ km per month.

  3. It’s not possible. Both Earth and Moon are rotating on their axis and the Moon is orbiting the Earth.

  4. No. The Moon is in motion around the Earth, and the Earth rotates, so the cable would either break or get pulled out of one of its attachment points as the Earth turns its end of the cable away from the Moon.

If you had a tether strong enough, you could make a space elevator. That would be much more useful than a computer cable between the Earth and the Moon, since information can just be transmitted wirelessly, and a space elevator would be a relatively inexpensive means of getting objects into space.

  6. No. The Moon is in orbit around the Earth and the Earth is rotating. As a result, the Moon isn’t above any particular spot on Earth for more than a fraction of a second.

  7. Look up synodic month on http://www.wolframalpha.com - the moon’s orbit is about 29.53 days (not 27.53). So let’s suppose you got the cable attached. Is your purpose to wind the cable around the earth, and pull the moon closer day by day causing the end of days when the moon plows into the earth?
