I will have to cordially disagree with the other responses here.

The thing I do agree with is that we need more information in order to truly know. Specifically, the specific laptop you're referring to. Even then, many if not all laptops are configurable, making knowing which one you have less valuable.

I'm going to take a guess here and say that you are most likely referring to an svideo cable http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svideo . This cable type is quite common among laptops, and TV's alike, making it a very likely choice. A word of warning though, even though it's *fairly* common, it's not *very* common on either laptops or TV's. Due to this, if the cable you're talking about is indeed an svideo cable, please before getting one ensure that the TV and the laptop both have svideo capability. Also, verify that it is s-video and not 7P (7-pin mini-DIN). They look very similar, but one requires a different plug.

There are also some really interesting things you can get, like s-video to component, vga to svideo, 7P to s-video and composite, etc. Before getting any unstandard cables (all of these I've listed with the exception of s-video aren't standard), remember that sometimes they can be difficult or impossible to use without the proper combination of equipment.

S-Video to composite http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814999015&cm_re=s-video-_-14-999-015-_-Product

... and now for the really crazy stuff

VGA to SVIDEO and RCA F Cable http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.9812
7P to SVIDEO Cable http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.9811
VGA to S-video and 3RCA F Cable http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.9813

Anyway, hope that was helpful. Just remember that a lot of times, cables aren't the only piece to the puzzle. Many times your laptop will have built in hardware which makes this possible in the first place, the cable is just a way to get that from the laptop to the TV.
References :
Well... it kind of DOES depend on what kind of laptop you have (not the operating system, the laptop itself). It also depends on your TV. You have the buy a cable that will go from the video-out on you laptop to the video-in on your TV. There are several kinds of connectors for video out/in, so not knowing what you're working with, it's kind of hard to tell you what sort of cable you need.

Some have serial (VGA) port. Some have HDMI ports... one of the laptops I owned even had composite video/audio ports built into it.
References :
It doesn't matter what operating system you have, it depends on what connections you have on your laptop.. the most common laptop to tv connections are as follows:-

- Serial Lead (VGA)

- HDMI

- sVHS
