Can I record TV onto my PC using VGA cable?

Filed under: cable tv on pc — admin @ 5:46 am

I have a VGA port on my PC, but that only streams the PC onto the TV. I also have a VGA-IN port on my PC Monitor. Can I hook my TV up to the monitor's VGA-IN to record TV?

No, you would have to buy a TV Tuner card for your computer.

  2. I am not quit sure about that. I also hook my laptop up to my tv via vga cable but I can only transfer info from the pc to the tv not tv to pc. I think you can buy connections to record via vcr/dvd recorder from the pc/tv to the other. There are also options to subscribe to a cable service through the internet to receive onto the computer. I don't really know if you can do it through the pc from the tv though. If you can manage to hook a vcr/dvd recorder, they may have the option to view tv stations through that device and receive information to the pc. But I am not positive. Try it. I am sure that by now they may have found a way to do so.

  3. Knightro is correct… to answer both your questions… in order…

    No. No.

Remember, your TV is a monitor. It is fed video and audio. Most TVs do not have an AV-out connection. If it did, that connection would be marked appropriately. The VGA port on consumer TVs is AV-in, only. To capture what the TV is displaying, you need to tap whatever is feeding the TV (satellite or cable box, digital receiver, game console, etc). This is usually done at the analog/RCA/composite connections or the video source using "Y" cables and an analog/digital converter like those from Canopus. There are others that can do component and HDMI as well.

Unless the VGA port on your computer is magically featured or is non-standard, it is likely that VGA port is AV-out only.
