Is it possible to hook up a connection from my TV to laptop to play movies from my laptop to tv?

Filed under: tv on laptop — admin @ 4:16 pm

I have windows media center, what kind of cable or connection would i need to play the movies or internet tv from my laptop on my TV?

Media Center is a software package. It works with lots of different hardware configurations. Also every TV is different. You will need to examine the laptop and see what types of output you have. For certain, there will be a VGA output that you would use to attach an external computer monitor. If your TV has a VGA in port, you can use that with a standard computer monitor cable.

Older laptaps often have an RCA port or a S-Video port. Depending on which yours has, you would need either an RCA or SVideo cable (Google them to see what they look like). The other end of the cable will have to match whatever input is on the back of your TV. (RCA is most common)

Note that VGA, RCA and SVideo all carry ONLY the video. None o them will send the SOUND to your TV. You will need a second cable to go from the headset/speaker jack on your laptop (normally a "mini-jack") to whatever the input is on the TV. (Usually a stereo RCA.)

Finally, if it is a new laptop. It may have a flat, slotted port that looks a lot like USB that is labeled HDMI. That is a High Definition video port. Most TVs today have an HDMI input. It carries not only the picture, but also stereo sound. So if both have an HDMI port, you only need one cable for both picture and sound - and it will give you the best quality of both.

But you will have to look at your laptop to see what is available to you - and your TV.

laptop on tv not working?

Filed under: tv on laptop — admin @ 4:48 pm

i have plugged my laptop to my tv and i just cant get the laptop to show a second screen on the display settings
laptop is a sony vgn-nr21z
tv is a LG
and the cable is VGA (HDDB15 15-pin) (Male) to RCA Component Y/Pr/Pb (3x Male)
any help would be great thanks :) tryed all that no luck as i said its only showing up as one screen thanks for reply though

VGA to Component video cables only work if your VGA device is capable of outputting an RGB Component compatible signal. Unfortunately, computers can almost NEVER do this.

What you are going to need is an actual VGA to component converter. This type of converter will take the VGA signal from your computer as input and convert it to a true RGB Component signal to go to your TV. The cable cannot accomplish this, and just changes the physical plugs. There is nothing in that cable you have to convert the signal from one format to another. VGA is a 5 part video signal while the Component is a 3 part signal. The horizontal and vertical sync signals need to be combined with the green video channel so that it can be sent as a component video format.

I have personally used more than a dozen of these converters and the one that seems to be the best compromise between quality and price is the one found at vgatocomponent.com. You can see their page at this link:

http://vgatocomponent.com/

I would strongly recommend returning that cable for a refund if at all possible. Those cables only work under very specific circumstances, and are generally intended to be used to connect an RGB component source to a VGA projector that supports RGB component signals through the VGA port.

How do I hook up my Toshiba laptop to my Toshiba TV with a VGA Cable?

Filed under: tv on laptop — admin @ 7:51 am

I know where to put the cable in on the side of my laptop, but where on the TV? I can’t use an S-Cable because I don’t have that port on my laptop. Help please, thank you!
By the way, I want to hook it up so I can watch the movies I have on my laptop, on my TV.

Locate the VGA port on your laptop it’s the one with small circles and it look’s like a small irregular trapezoid. Connect the VGA cable to that port and take the other end and connect it to the tv’s vga port( unless of course your tv doesn’t have a vga port). After that press fn f5 to switch between the screens if it doesn’t do it automatically. If your TV doesn’t have the vga port get a new tv that has one and follow the steps I gave you.

How to connect my laptop to TV. My laptop has HDMI and the TV has S-VIDEO ports.?

How to connect my laptop to TV. My laptop has HDMI and the TV has S-VIDEO ports. I want to connet my latop to TV so that I can watch movies on TV.

Check to see if your TV has an HDMI input. If it does you can just connect a HDMI cable from your laptop directly to your tv. Or if your tv has a DVI input, you can buy an HDMI to DVI Cable. I’m not too sure if there are any HDMI to S-Video ports/cables.
