It's not illegal, no. Anyone who says it won't work, though, is only half right. If you're wanting to pick up DirecTV programming and you connect the dish properly, you can get the programming from two different satellites (the ones that Dish Network piggybacks off of). The problem is, DirecTV broadcasts the majority of their programming from the satellites located at 101 degrees, which you will NOT get with Dish Network LNBs. Also, if you're trying to get Dish Network programming with a DirecTV receiver, it won't work because DirecTV receivers will only decode DirecTV programming.

since dir tv and dish has differant types of encryption's its like trying to liston to tv on your radio
