Can I install Direct Tv using my existing wiring system for my old cable tv?

Filed under: satellite tv systems — admin @ 12:02 am

I would like to install satellite tv but do not want to be out the expense of rewiring my entire house. Is my old tv cable wiring compatible with Direct Tv?

yes and no -since a Satellite needs a receiver to un-encryte the signal to be viewed-meaning if you connect your coaxial cable to the receiver you can watch tv thru out the whole house but its only the channel the receiver is tuned too-unlike cable-if you do get a sat set up they will run a rg6 cable from the sat dish to your receiver which is alot better than rg5—now the yes part you can get by with using the old rg5 cables but the signal will be greatly compromised -i have dishnet and my house is wired to other tvs thru the coaxial port to the rest of the house using rg5 using a splitter to my kids tv in their rooms but it is greatly diminished signal -but they can only watch what we are watching down stairs unless you get a multi room set up

  1. Nope. Directv uses a sattelite dish that requires a coaxial cable from the satellite dish (on top of your roof) to the inside of your house, which connects into a satellite receiver. The old tv cable is probably from a cable company and is not compatible with any satellite services.
