What Digital Standard for Digital Pay-TV Companies like Satellite and Cable in the US? DVB or ATSC?
What is the Digital Standard for Digital Pay TV Companies like DirecTV, Dish Network, Time warner Cable, Comcast etc. both Digital Cable and Digital Satellite TV in the US? is it Digital Video Broadcast (DVB-S) or Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC-S)?
Dishnetwork is the only major pay provider that uses DVB-S. A minor one called Globecast also uses DVB-S. Both use the current version of Nagra for security.
DirecTV uses their own proprietary format, which is not DVB, but similar to it. They use NDS Videoguard security.
Most cable providers use a somewhat standard QAM modulation, and most digital TV sets can tune the non-encrpyted channels. They mostly use either Motorola DCII or Scientific Altlanta PowerVu encryption.
Audio is almost always Dolby, where DVB formats use Musicam audio typically.
ATSC is just a broadcast digital format.
