How do I know if I can watch movies on my television from my computer?
I have a HP Pavilion dv7t with only a vga output. My TV only has a S-Video input. Could I just get a VGA to S-Video cable? How do I know if I have the software/hardware necessary for this? If no to any of those questions I could just get a VGA to S-Video adapter right?
edit: How about hdmi to s-video? Is that possible at all?
That will NEVER work.
Those VGA-to-Svideo cable adapters are meant for video cards that have a specially-built VGA port capable of sending out an S-video signal. It will NOT work with just any VGA port.
Your Pavilion dv7t’s VGA port is NOT one of those specially-built ones. If you attempt to use that cable adapter, you will get NO image.
EDITED TO ADD:
HDMI-to-S-video will NEVER work either. Those adapters will only work with a specially-built HDMI port. Which your Pavilion DOES NOT HAVE.
if you have a vga port, your software/hardware is fully capable of doing it.
You can buy a vga to s-video cable for pretty cheap (under ten). Here is one place: http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Unlimited-AUD-2350-S-Video-Adapter/dp/B000V6W7ZY
basically once you plug it in, you just need to go into display settings and turn on the extra display (if it doesn’t automatically do that for you).
Its real simple.

Yup you can use something like this, cost under 6$

But then it depends on your VGA card, some support it and some dont, try to find a S-Video out in your computer, then its much more easier
It looks something like this: http://www.top220.ru/foto/news/rS-Video.JPG
