It's been a while since I worked for the cable company but when I worked for them we installed a low-pass filter on the line going to the cable modem. In other words all TV channels were blocked. On the same note we installed a high pass filter on the TV lines, making the cable modem not work on those lines but TV was fine.

They may have changed policies since I worked there. The filters will be in a locked box and you won't be able to see them without breaking the lock or seal or other illegal activity.

If you do use a splitter try to get one called a tap. A tap will allow most of the signal to transmit down one line and a weaker signal going down the other. Put the strong signal on the cable modem, they are the most touchy. If your TV introduces interference into the line and that interferes with other peoples cable or TV reception you will find a cable repair man at your door asking to see your setup. Keep that in mind.
References :
It is very possible . If there is only one outlet for the cable then buy a double socket where you can plug in first the primary of the double socket then plug in two for the unit you want to plug in.
References :
I tried it already and it works.

I have cable. I also have a digital phone, wireless internet for my computer and digital cable. I have a cable modem and a router, plus a USB adapter that sits on top of my desk, which is 65-70 feet away from the cable connection. I also have a DVD player and a VHS player on an A/B switch. They all work.
References :
Get a two way splitter and have the feed cable go into the one end. Use the other two to connect to your modem and TV. I have hooked up hundreds of them that way. I used to work for Comcast.
